Ka-Spel & Silverman, a wonderful odyssey to the end of the world

Today we are happy and return in this Corriente Alterna blog. The forces of time and space to write on this occasion have been generated for themselves after a warm and musical event, and of course, for a personal reason too. This is the visit to our country made by the tremendous teacher Edward Ka-Spel and Phil Knight (aka Silverman).

Founders of the extraordinary and prolific Anglo-Dutch band The Legendary Pink Dots (LDP), creators of one of the most authentic sounds in the musical history of the last 3 decades where they explores elements of the neo-sicodelia, experimentation, ambient and synth pop, among others, these musicians grabbed suitcases and equipment to take a pause in their activities with the band and make a genuine excitement in these distant lands in the south end of the world.

Invited by our compatriots Un Festín Sagital (RIO impressive group that autodescribe as a "psycho-experimental band willing to rip your wisdom"), Ka-Spel and Silverman crossed continent from San Francisco, USA, to Santiago only for playing in Chile and then come back to the northern hemisphere after a brief but intense musical agenda that included stops at the Bar Laduana (Valparaiso), The Living (Santiago) and Blondie (Santiago) on November 29, November 30 and 1 December, respectively. The initiative of this mini-tour came from a fortuitous event when Michel Leroy (composer Festín Sagital) had been invited to the U.S. to strengthen ties within the circuit of the stamp Beta-Lactam Ring Records (where his band members and the same LDP), because problems for approval of his visa, Leroy was unable to travel so before that, then, the chilean musician spent the way calling the British to come up here ... and so we are very grateful!

Despite the low attendance of the public each day, Ka-Spel and Silverman were able to deliver the best of their music making an accurate and varied selection of his extensive discography between a show and another, and always keep captives to their followers who became more unconditional by the richness of his works as the same time for their charisma and human warmth that gave before, during and after their presentations and distendeddly free sharing with them. With a sober and minimalist scene, invoking a unique atmosphere in which the incredible Ka-Spel`s voice and Silverman`s amazing keyboards making a single professional body which sometimes moved with cadence and other visceral spasms that shuddered at ease the minds of listeners. There were pieces of solo interpretations of each as well as the LDP, of which highlighted some as "Just a Lifetime," "Third Eye", "Nightshade", "The Grain Kings" and especially a very hardcore version of "Hellsville" together with the participation of a saxophone and an acoustic guitar by members of Un Festín Sagital he did at times recall the sound of downtown New York led by John Zorn mixed with a strong rhythmic foundation that emanated from the synthesizer Silverman.

The opportunity to share with Chilean musicians (one of the main goals of his coming to our country) was realized in each of the days when they were presented, especially the one held at the Bar Laduana of Valparaiso, where they also played Círculo 6, E-Men, Banco Mundial, Dayanandrea, Colectivo No, and of course Un Festín Sagital, all making it clear that here`s also an important scene linked to the neo-sicodelia and the avant-gard. Cross our fingers for to this conference comes to editing any album or a DVD audio-visual work.

Ultimately, it was a series of master classes taught by these two geniuses which left more than clear why they are one of the most important musicians today, and why their style and charisma generate much affinity with his followers.

As it`s shows the visit of these musicians, I will leave you some photographs and a couple of items of Ka-Spel and Silverman together. (See the post in spanish).

I take this opportunity to reiterate my thanks to Michel, Claudio, Gonzalo and all the friends who made possible the coming of these great musicians and, of course, to themselves ... the legendary Edward and Phil.
